Busy busy busy...

Firefighter Mandatory class started Thursday night. Three-hour class turned into four and we still didn't actually get to finding turnout gear, so I go back in the morning to see if we can find gear that fits me. That should be fun.

Things you never think about (or at least I didn't, til now)... it takes a crapload of hose to run a fire department, and all that hose has to be pressure tested every year! We've tested 12,000 feet of hose in the last few weeks. 5-inch hose, even empty, weighs a lot. With water in it, don't bother trying to move it.

Got word today that I passed my HazMat Awareness and Operations test, so I have my first official certifications now. Also, my very own Indiana PSID (Public Safety ID) number. Kinda nifty. Test was hard and I was worried. I'm really glad I don't have to take that one again!

My CPR/First Aid cert expired long ago, and I knew they occasionally offered it at work, so I asked if I could get in on the next class. After being told that I was basically volunteering for the safety committee, I got added to the class and got that out of the way last week. Kinda cool, 'cause AEDs didn't even exist (at least I'd never heard of them) last time I went through a CPR class. It was taught by one of the guys from the Fishers Fire Department and it was a nice combination of classroom and hands-on (the dummies have improved since last time too) and anecdotes about things he's seen while responding to accidents/etc. w/ the fire department.

Today was my last day at work for a little over a week... I go back on Tuesday the 9th... so the last week has been extra-crazy, between trying to get ready to be out for a week (at quarter-end, no less) and having both my boss and one of my systems techs out all this week. Wheee! I got to be two and a half people for a week, while also trying to be Next-Week Me so that I don't have to worry about next week, well, next week.

Tomorrow, I go to Mooresville and swap the Trooper for the Beetle. The TDI (turbo-diesel) guru still isn't happy with how it's running, but it's in good enough shape to make The Trip (more on that in a minute) and what it really needs right now is to be driven, so I'm gonna get it, run a few tanks of diesel through it, and then swap back w/ Jeff after I come back from Canada. Either it'll get better because part of its problem is bad fuel and I'll blow that all out, or it won't, in which case he wants to take the injector pump apart and play. Heh. Gotta love a mechanic who takes things apart (given that his goal is saving me from potentially needing a $900 injection pump, I think this is a Very Good Thing). Also tomorrow... pick up dog food, cat food, cash for the pet sitter, and go to Station 1 to try to find the aforementioned turnout gear. (Finding hand-me-downs that fit, when 99% of the previous members of the department were guys, will be interesting. Thankfully, they've had one other woman and we're reasonably sure her boots will fit me, if we can find them. And yes, everybody gets hand-me-down gear... turnout gear costs a couple thousand dollars, so it stays in use as long as its in good shape.)

Sunday, I go to Canada. Why, you ask? To get a puppy!!! I'm getting another Toller. A male, son of one of my favorite males, and who apparently is taking after his dad both physically and temperamentally. I'm so excited! I'll have him with me at Musecon next weekend, so Chicago should be prepared for baby Toller cuteness! I'm also bringing back puppy's dad to stay with me for awhile while a friend of mine shows him, in hopes of finishing his AKC championship (he has his Canadian championship already).

Probably coming back from Canada (Peterborough, to be precise... northeast of Toronto) on Wednesday, so I have a day to recuperate before leaving again on Friday for Musecon. For that trip, we're going to put me, Jen, Maddie, Maddie's booster seat, puppy, puppy's crate, possibly Nick, and all our suitcases in my Beetle for the weekend. That should be entertaining. If I can't get Nick to settle down and ride nicely with the distraction of a four-year-old sitting next to him, then he might stay here w/ the sitter, but hopefully he'll get to go. It'll be good for the puppy to have a grown dog along that he knows. :-)

In the day that I'm home, between Canada and Chicago, I have another class... this time on using SCBA (the air packs you always see on firefighters). I'm missing a class on personal safety while I'm in Canada, but my training officer said he'd catch me up, since that one's mostly in the book, so I won't miss much. Class continues through mid-October, one or two nights a week and most Saturdays. And I'm gonna be raising a new puppy, and chauffering Nick (puppy's dad) to shows. Plus I still have a foster dog.

Apparently I've lost my mind. Eep!

And if that's the case, I should have done it sooner, 'cause damn this is fun! :-)

See some of y'all at Muse!

I've never had to worry about losing my mind. Unless, of course, the string breaks.

How does that Lewis Carroll thing go:

"In my youth," Father William replied to his son,
"I feared it might injure the brain,
But now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again."

Spare time and spare tire are almost the same thing. Could that be why clocks are round, except for those rectangular Sicilian clocks. Oh wait, that's pizza. Never mind.

There's a fine line between "lots of stuff is happening, I feel alive and excited" and "too much stuff is happening, I'm overwhelmed and I can't take it." Sounds like you're on the good side of the line so far; hope it stays that way.

Are you going to be herding furries in 2 weeks?
