In about 30 minutes, I head out for Chicago and Capricon. We've got a ton of great music planned... I hope I see some of y'all there! :-)
I spent a great portion of 2011 in a state of near-panic about financial issues, which tended to overshadow other things on a day-to-day basis, but when I look back at the year, it was really a pretty good year (especially when compared to 2010, which definitely overstayed its welcome).

So, what did I do with my year?? )

So yeah... eventful year, and one that I could look back on and find a lot of negatives, but instead I look back and realize that I have amazing friends (both new and old), I have challenging volunteer opportunities that I enjoy and which get me out of my house and interacting with people, I've got four healthy dogs (counting the visiting Nick) and four healthy cats, and I got to spend the year making really incredible music with Wild Mercy. So I'll count 2011 as a win for me and challenge 2012 to be even better for all of us!
So... who all's going to be there?

Wild Mercy has a kickass set planned (in our full "with fiddler" configuration, which makes me squeee!), and all of us plus the luminous [ profile] quadrivium will be the backing band for [ profile] cadhla's concert.

It's going to be So.Much.Fun!! I hope I see lots of you there! ('Specially since I won't be at OVFF, so Conclave has to provide enough of a FilkerFix to tide me over for the rest of October!)
Pre-reg for FilKONtario closes on Monday!

That's only a few days away. Do you know where your registration is? (And if not, why not? Go! Register now!!)

It's gonna rock, after all!
So, who all's going to FKO?

We had Wild Mercy rehearsal on Sunday, even though poor [ profile] harperjen had the crud and laryngytis, and finalized our set list and ran through a few things. It's the best bits of the set list we'd planned for Capricon, then the set list that actually got played by our "Trouble Comes in Threes" incarnation, which works out to a solid hour of rockin' tunes! It's gonna be a great concert, and I'm sooooooo looking forward to FKO.

This is my first FKO! Can you believe it? I keep trying to go, and it keeps not working out (it being in the middle of our fiscal year-end craziness at work has been contributory in past years), so I'm really fired up about it. And there are going to be lots of people there that I've never met, including [ profile] talis_kimberley, who I had hoped to meet when she was at Duckon, then my truck died and caused me to stay home.

And there will be lots of people who I normally only see once a year or once every couple of years at OVFF, so that will be fun too. One of the best parts of getting out of our "home" region is getting to see and hear filkers that I don't see often. I guess after FKO, GaFilk will have to be my next "I haven't made it there" goal for filk cons. :-)

So, back to my original question... who all's gonna be at FKO? It's coming up really _soon_ now, so plan fast if you haven't planned already!
Whee! At this time two nights from now, I should be in open filk at Capricon, or possibly having a fast concert set run-thru with [ profile] harperjen and [ profile] sweetmusic_27 before decamping to open filk for the rest of the evening.

For most of the weekend, you'll be able to find me in the Capricon Cafe, where I have a set on Friday afternoon and where I'll be running sound for most of the other sets on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday night, we have Semi-Feral Mercy: Trouble Comes in Threes! (We decided that if Jen and I are "Half-Wild", then Jen, Amy and I are just Trouble. :-)) There will be harp! There will be fiddle! There will be guitar and percussiony bits.

We'll be doing songs you've never heard Wild Mercy perform! We may even be doing songs that we've never heard Wild Mercy perform (see earlier comment about a concert run-thru on Friday night... this would be why :-)). After all, we have to take advantage of having our very own fiddler, which doesn't happen nearly often enough, so we may go back to our roots and do actual traditional Celtic tunes. (Ooooh... aaaaah...)

Whatever happens, it will be fun, and you should totally be there!

(Oh, yeah... bring your voice, 'cause there will be singalongs.)
Home from Wild Mercy rehearsal, where we were picking our set list for Capricon. Taking advantage of having [ profile] sweetmusic_27 there, it's a very fiddle-heavy set. :-)
Wow... I've been bad about not posting here on any remotely regular basis, haven't I?

Sorry about that... I'll try to do better! :-)

Now that we've all survived the holidays, Wild Mercy is focusing on our next couple of conventions. First up, we'll be at Capricon next month, where we'll be joined by [ profile] sweetmusic_27! I think all of us have Capricon Cafe sets, and I'll be working the Cafe all weekend running sound, so I should be easy to find. Wild Mercy has a concert on Saturday night before open filk, and we'll do some new stuff, and some old stuff, and some Far Light stuff. (If you have favorites you want to suggest, now would be the time!)

So who all's gonna be at Cap? I know Xap, Gundo and Roper will be, 'cause they're all working. :-) What about the rest of you? Chime in!

Next up after Capricon is FKO!!! We're wildly excited to be the GOHs at FKO this year and it's hard to believe that it's only a few months away now. There will be music, and workshops, and more music, and I fully expect that hilarity will ensue. I'm extra excited because not only is it my first-ever FKO, it's my first trip to Canada! (I know... I know... I've lived w/in driving distance of the border for almost 15 years and never actually made the trip... and I even have Canadian dogs!!) I hope we're going to see lots of you there in April!
Well... if anybody's still reading, here's a catch-up post on what's up in the life of me, since it's been over a month since my last post. (oops)

First, this actually pre-dates my last post by a month, but since I forgot to mention it here... I have a new cat! Fiddler rounds out the kitty crew at four, taking the spot as Izzy's playmate, which was vacated when Bigfoot died. I adopted Fiddler from the Humane Society of Hamilton County, an excellent no-kill shelter in the county just south of me (where I work and where I used to live). He spent the first couple of weeks living upstairs while the other cats were downstairs, letting him get good and bonded to me and used to being here before introducing the rest of the crew. Then I let Izzy come up and she and Fiddler got a couple of weeks to become buds before Smudge and Gorby (sibling pair) were added to the mix. Izzy and Fiddler turned out to be the best of friends, and they play and play and play. Izzy has a waist again! (She'd been getting pudgy without a playmate.)

What's happened in my life in the last month or so... )

So that's my last month or so in a nutshell (and in pictures!). How've y'all been?

(NOTE: Picture links to Facebook are public links... no Facebook membership required. The Zoo gallery is on Flickr.)
Last-minute car troubles have grounded me in Indy for the weekend. On the way home from the GB Mojo concert last night, the truck started acting odd, and my mechanic confirmed it as alternator problems this morning. He's going to work me in today, but there's no way he'll have it fixed in time for me to get there for enough of the con to make it worth the trip so, sadly, I've cancelled my room and my dogsitter and I'll be staying home.

On the plus side, this means I get a little more time hanging out w/ Ginger and Bekah before they have to leave for their next gig!
Since people keep asking and I keep forgetting to post... here's where I'll be for the next few months...

Duckon... I'll miss Friday and am hoping to arrive in time for the Lady Mondegreen concert (if lucky, even in time for the Dandelion Wine concert!) on Saturday. Not sure when I'm leaving. Probably before the Dead Dog on Sunday... possibly after open filk on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

InConJunction... Wild Mercy is (are?) the Filk GOH(s) for InCon over 4th of July weekend. There will be a concert, and a drum workshop, and lots of open filking.

WindyCon... I'll be at Windy this year to see Tricky Pixie, making this the first year I've managed to hit the three main Chicago cons all in the same year. Thank the powers-that-be for a new paid-time-off policy at work that effectively gives me more vacation days than in the past. :-) Membership is bought and room reservation made, so I'll be there all weekend.
So... at some point during Capricon weekend, I have a set in the Capricon Cafe. (I'll probably be in the Cafe all weekend, doing my usually run-sound-and-record gig, so come hang out and hear some great music!)

My dilemma is what to put in my set. Right now, I have four songs planned... if you're planning to be there, feel free to suggest additions!

At the moment, I'm planning Archetype Cafe, two new songs of [ profile] cadhla's, and Hallelujah. If [ profile] sweetmusic_27 will join me, I'll probably add Deadly Dance and maybe Gentle Arms of Eden.

Any suggestions?
I keep contemplating my checking account and contemplating Windycon and I've been forced to the realization that it's just not gonna happen this year. *sigh*

I am currently planning to make all three Chicago cons in 2010, starting w/ Capricon in February, so I'll see a bunch of y'all there!
...I'll be at or near Duckon! W00t!

There will be much musical goodness.

I have no programming responsibilities whatsoever, which makes me very very happy. My time is my own, to spend w/ many people who I don't see nearly often enough.

Will you be there?
Last night, I ran the songs for my internet cafe set, packed everything (I hope!) and hauled it upstairs, and finally fell into bed at about 2 a.m.

This morning, I hauled everything from kitchen to truck and now I'm at the office. I work 'til 2, then I'm hitting the road, which should put me in Chicago squarely in the middle of rush hour. Yay for good planning!! *rolls eyes at self*

For the rest of the weekend, you can probably find me in the Capricon internet cafe, the filk room, or the pool (which will likely substitute for sleep at some point, water baby that I am). Or possibly holed up in my room practicing. I tried to add way too many new songs to my solo set, so I have to solidify the ones that I'm keeping, cull the ones that won't quite be ready, and figure out timing and order. Nothing like leaving that 'til the last minute, eh?

I hope to see a bunch of you there! :-)
We're fast coming up on time for Cap, which is one of my favorite cons for a whole lot of reasons.

I get to see lots of people who I know and like and don't see often enough.

[ profile] billroper puts me to "work" in the Internet Cafe, where I get to feel useful and have fun all at the same time (running sound and recording).

I get to room with [ profile] sweetmusic_27, who's one of the bestest roomies evar.

Wild Mercy gets to do the whooooooole Dream of a Far Light concert again. Only the second time we've ever performed the whole darn thing in one place (well, other than Barry and Sally's basement, but that hardly counts!).

I get an Internet Cafe set all of my very own (though I may draft afore-mentioned roomie, 'cause everything's better w/ fiddle!), which will force me to actually, oh, practice between now and the con.

I can take a dog if I want, 'cause all Starwood properties are dog-friendly. This year it might be Mr. Spotty Dog, since it's his birthday that weekend. (Hmmm... I need a Thunder icon, don't I?)

It's not only at a Starwood hotel (I collect Starwood points... it's the only hotel reward program in which I ever acquire useful quantities of points)... but this year it's moving from the Sheraton to the Westin. I'm a hotel snob... I admit it... and I loves me some Westin. (I may even get upgraded to a Junior Suite... still waiting to hear back from the reservations dude on whether they managed to swing that or if I waited too late to ask for the upgrade.)

Capricon feels like home to me... or like a good family reunion. And after a long winter of lack-of-cons (nothing since OVFF? That doesn't seem right, but I missed Windy, so I think it is...), it'll be really really nice to go hang w/ my musical family for a few days.

Who's gonna be there? Chime in!
Wow... now I'm losing whole weekends without realizing it. My brain had _totally_ convinced me that InCon was this (upcoming) weekend.

Oh, no, not so much. It was last weekend. And I knew that, 'cause it's always the weekend closest to the 4th of July.

I wasn't going to be able to go for the weekend, but I'd at least planned to grab a day pass and go for Saturday's filking.

Moving really _has_ eaten my brain!
The hazard of using multiple calendars is that sometimes there are things on one that overlap things on the other.

I somehow managed to put the upcoming Indianapolis Women's Chorus concerts (for which I'm drumming) on my work calendar. Duckon was on my personal Google calendar. The two don't talk to each other, and for some reason it took me 'til now to realize that the IWC concerts and Duck are the same weekend.

I was already planning to just come to Duck on a daypass, 'cause I couldn't afford the time away all weekend this close to the move. Now I won't even be doing that, 'cause I'd have to be back in Indy by 6 p.m. at the latest, so trying to make part of Duck would just be silly.

Y'all have fun for me, okay?
So here I am, at 1:30 a.m., realizing that I'm sooooo not ready to leave for Columbus in the morning.

Clothes are washed, at least, but they're still in the dryer. I have no idea if I'll actually bring anything that goes together (though I can't go far wrong w/ blue jeans), but I at least won't have to spend the entire weekend in a swimsuit, which is currently the only thing in my suitcase.

CDs are packed (by the simple expedient of having left two boxes in the truck after I picked them up). Promo flyers are designed and printed.

Random bits of sound gear need to be found and packed. The bulk of that is done, along w/ djembe, keyboard and keyboard stand. Guitar needs to be packed, and I should find my tuner.

The house is a wreck, but the cats are staying home alone and the dogs are staying with the sitter, so at least I don't have to clean for the sitter. :-)

I have a vague idea of what I'm doing in my hall set tomorrow afternoon at 3. Haven't practiced enough guitar lately, so I may not be playing much guitar in the filk room after I abuse my fingers tomorrow afternoon.

As much of the house paperwork as I can do before leaving is done. Earnest money check and signed papers delivered, insurance agent contacted for an insurance commitment, availability given to agent so she can schedule the inspection. Packrats has been contacted, I have a quote, and (unlike PODS) they do deliver to Frankton.

In the morning I need to pick up more power steering fluid, air up all the tires, check the oil and spend a small fortune on gas.

I think I'll go to bed, so that I can continue this insanity in the morning!
Wild Mercy will be the Music GOHs at Context 21 the weekend of Sept. 26-28 in Columbus, OH. Author GOH is [ profile] andpuff, and [ profile] robin_june will also be a guest, so it should be a great weekend!
