It's all
min0taur's fault, you know. I went from quite happily owning no guitars to suddenly having three.
Yes, you read that right... three.
I'm not a guitarist... I'm a keyboard player. I dabble in guitar primarily 'cause they're easier to carry around than a keyboard. Since I have a dodgy right shoulder, my first venture back into guitar-ownership (after 20 years of being guitar-free) was a Squier electric that
min0taur passed along to me... one of those "deal too good to pass up" kind of things. It's small... and pretty... and kind to my re-learning fingers... but it's not exactly lightweight and it has that pesky need for an amp if I want to actually hear it.
So next was the Martin, whose story is here. It's thin, but has great sound and it's remarkably mellow. It was also set up really well straight from the store, so it hasn't had to go see our local luthier yet. Its first excursion out into the real world was for Dorsai Thing in February and I love it.
But (and there's always a "but," right?) there are occasional times that it's too mellow... especially for single-note arpeggiated kinds of things, where I don't even have to sing very loud to drown it out. So some little voice in the back of my mind kept calling me back to the Ovation Tangent T357 that I'd played while I was deciding on the Martin. For a lot of my stuff, it's probably too bright. It's got "Hey, Listen To Me Now!" presence, versus the much more laid-back feel of the Martin. But for the 10-20% of things that I do that could use the extra "bite," it's perfect.
But I don't need another guitar, right?
Right???
C'mon, help me out here!
Oh never mind... it's too late.
The Tangent has been discontinued, and I've been watching the price drop. Today, having convinced myself that I really need a "backup" guitar if I'm going to start playing guitar at Wild Mercy gigs, I wandered over to Sam Ash after work, where I discovered that they'd put the Ovation on closeout and the price had come down another $150 from the lowest price I'd seen.
So it's done... I'm a three-guitar household... and I can hear the maniacal laughter from
min0taur all the way across town. Why do I feel like I've somehow been unfaithful to the Martin, buying another guitar already when it's only three months old? *blink*
