Tonight, I found myself needing to be in two places at once.

John from Kennedy's Kitchen had asked if I could run sound for them at Fionn MacCool's in Fishers tonight and then, practically on the heels of accepting that gig, I got a call that tonight was the bachelorette party for [livejournal.com profile] textdeviant.

Drat. Drat drat drat.

As much as I wanted to go to the bachelorette outing, I had to stand by my earlier commitment to John (not a hardship, since I love running sound for them... they're fun, they're nice people, and they're Not Loud), so this afternoon I called [livejournal.com profile] textdeviant to let her know that I wouldn't be making it for the bachelorette evening. I explained the conflict and went dashing on homewards to walk the dogs, grab the mixing board, and head back into town.

It was a slow night at Fionn's tonight. Friday's are typically a bit slow, and threatening (and then pouring) weather didn't help, so imagine my delight, halfway through the first set, when in wandered the entire bachelorette party! I love my friends... they brought the party to me since I couldn't go to it!

Then the really cool part happened. "Danny Boy" was requested, and John started a lovely rendition (one of the few people who can do that song and not have it sound cheesy), and suddenly he had the backing of the Roving Bachelorette Party Choir. Soaring soprano voices chimed in on the chorus. Harmonies happened. The band looked stunned... then thrilled... and spent the rest of the evening egging on the ersatz choir. This got much of the rest of the crowd locked into what was happening, and suddenly a slow night at Fionn's turned into An Event.

It was lovely. The band had fun. The singers had fun. A mutual-appreciation feedback loop of the best sort grew for the rest of the evening, and I just sat behind the console and grinned.

It was a good night. Now I think I'll go to bed while "Wild Mountain Thyme" is still running through my brain.
