US iPhone users... how's your reception?

When I moved from Indy to TinyLittleTown, I had to change cell phone carriers since TMobile's got no coverage out here. I switched to AT&T partly because their coverage map said I'd have good coverage and partly because it would let me switch to an iPhone if I wanted.

For the first month, I've been using my old Samsung, since it's a quad-band phone and happily worked w/ AT&T's SIM card, but the reception has been generally crappy (and non-existent downstairs unless I leave the phone lying in the windowsill).

So here's my question... What's reception like on the iPhone? Specifically voice-call reception and 2G? I know I'll have decent 3G reception when I'm in a 3G area (at work or anything else I do in Indy), but 3G's not available out here, so it'll be 2G for me at home.

I can't afford to have even less signal than I currently do, and I don't want to tie myself to a 2-yr AT&T contract and wind up w/ a really expensive iPod, so I'm hoping the collective wisdom of LJ and Twitter can offer some advice...
