Tonight's NFL season opener is presenting me with quite a dilemma... and also with the feeling that I'm going to be happy, in some sense, no matter who wins this game.
On the one hand, there are the Colts. Indy is home now, and the Colts are the reigning Super Bowl champs. Plus, there's a certain sentimental attachment to the Manning boys, since I remember when their daddy played for Ole Miss (and yes, I realize I'm dating myself with that statement).
On the other hand, I've been in Indy for 11 years, but I was in Mississippi for a lo-o-o-o-ong time before that, and the Saints were "our" pro football team. They were close... and for years and years they couldn't find a scoring drive with both hands and a map, so they were everybody's favorite underdog.
Early in the second quarter, they're tied 7-7. I was happy that the Colts were up when I first turned on the TV. But then I found myself cheering on the Saints defender who stripped the ball from a Colts receiver and ran it back for a 55-yard TD after the fumble recovery. (Thank goodness I'm at home and not in the stadium... I'd've probably gotten lynched for that!)
filkertom had an interesting discussion going this week about what sports fans get out of being sports fans... I'm not sure if either side of the discussion really made in gains in understanding the other opinion, but I know one of the things that I get out of it... specifically out of football. I'm a Daddy's girl... always have been... and I have fond and early memories of listening to Mississippi State football games on the radio (and even to the evil arch-rival Ole Miss, 'cause we could cheer for them when they weren't playing State). I came by my love of football early, so it's got sentimental associations for me, and that same early indoctrination into the game also taught me to appreciate the strategy and the athleticism of it.
Oh, and look... the Saints kicked a three-pointer, so they're up 10-7 now, with 4:46 left in the second quarter. Interesting! I think I'll go pay attention for awhile...
