I'm trying to remember the last time I had short hair.

I remember slightly longer than shoulder-length hair not long after college. I'm pretty sure the last time it was shorter than shoulder length was during college. nycgadgetgirl, do you remember?

Anyway... it's short again now! I called my favorite salon this morning and said "I know this is a stupid question, but I'm leaving town in the morning and I'd really rather have something nicer than a ponytail for this concert... any chance Sean can see me today?" He couldn't (which didn't surprise me, 'cause he books up way in advance), but Stacey could. She's cut my hair before (and she's also been there longer than anybody other than Sean, who owns the place) and I'm pretty sure the only reason I changed to Sean before was because I liked what he could do with long hair. Since long hair was about to not be an issue, I happily took the last-minute appointment with Stacey.

I basically threw myself on her mercy... told her I wanted to cut off enough to be able to donate to Locks of Love (which requires at least 10 inches) and reminded her of my basic Rules For Hair (which she remembered anyway)... it needs to be long enough for a ponytail or short enough to stay out of my eyes, and while I don't mind messing with it for special occasions, it needs to look good if all I do is wash it, maybe scrunch a little gel through it, and leave home with it wet.

I like the results! I have a 15-inch ponytail to send to Locks of Love, I have bangs (how entertaining!), and the rest is about chin length. We went through all the stages... "Here's how it looks wet... and here's how it looks if you just finger-comb it and let it dry... and finally, here's what you can do if you want to take the time to actually use *gasp* a brush and a blow dryer." Even for the latter, though, the brush was just to tame the bangs... everything else was done with fingers and a little bit of goo to get the strands to separate.

Coolness! This is going to be fun to get used to!

Now I finish packing for Conterpoint...

The last time I had hair less than shoulder length was 11 years ago. Someone gave me a Salon gift certificate as a birthday gift. since then I get 2 or 3 inches trimmed every year or two, whether it needs it or not.

I've never been able to grow my hair really long, because once it gets down to collar length, it starts becoming annoying, and it's always annoyed me into getting it cut before that theoretical point people with long hair tell me about when it grows long enough to be managable as long hair.

All I really want of my hair is that it stay out of my eyes and mouth and not tangle up when I comb it. Our society sees male baldness as one of the bad things about getting old -- I see it as one of the few benefits.

One of the guys at work said pretty much the same thing about male pattern baldness... that it relieved him from having to worry about haircuts and hairstyles.

And you're right... that in-between stage is awful. Short is good. Long is good. Short-growing-out-but-not-there-yet is just annoying.

Yeah, the yearly trim is pretty much necessary to get rid of the evil dead ends... my hair could tie itself in the most amazing knots right at the ends once they started to split. The occasional trim is our friend. :-)
