Email conversation with my Dad, referencing the house that I looked at this week where the owners are apparently willing to sell the resident pony along with the house and barn...

You want to be thorough about this, so ask your real estate agent if you can get an up to date appraisal on the pony.

How does one find an appraiser for a pony? :-)

Ask at a farm-supply store who are knowledgeable horse dealers in the area.

I almost said "reliable horse traders", but THAT has got to be the original oxymorom.

Our house almost came with two horses, but I refused to take them. Unless you really want a pony, I'd leave the animal out of the deal and let the current owners deal with it. Hay is very expensive this winter due to the drought, expect to pay somewhere upwards of $7 a square bale if you can find any for sale at all. I'm guessing you'd need at least 2 bales a week. Then there's the vet bills, and the farrier, and grain, and other misc. supplies.

If you're thinking of taking the pony in the deal and then selling it, since you've missed the window for the "Christmas pony" you'd probably have to wait at least until late spring when there's pasture available again. No one's really in the market for livestock at this time of year.

Tell your Dad he made me snort!!

I'm going to spend all day imagining what a pony appraiser would be like. *snicker*
