I got the call this afternoon that you never want to get when travelling... my pet-sitter's boss called and the sitter (L) had called and said that one of the two younger dogs, who she's been alternating leaving loose in my room with Chase, had gotten into Chase's meds and was "doing badly" and she was calling the vet.
At the time, L's boss didn't know which of the youngsters it was (Thunder or Drummer) and didn't have much in the way of details other than that he'd eaten Chase's entire bottle of Baytril (antibiotics) and also "the bottle of liquid stuff that was beside it that we don't know what it was" (thankfully, that was just an herbal calmative).
While I was anxiously waiting for an update, the vet called, thinking they were calling my house (my cell phone is my "home" phone) because they were dispatching a tech over to help L evaluate the situation. They at least knew that the problem child was Thunder (the English Setter), who is a substantially larger dog, so I gave the tech directions and she headed for my house. She called me again from the house, and Thunder was "not doing well" and had just had a seizure, so they bundled him into the car and took him back to Caring Hands.
May I just interject at this point that I love my vet and her practice? Dr. Roach and the rest of the staff at Caring Hands are great, and I was really impressed with how they handled this whole situation today. From sending a tech to the house, to keeping me updated through the whole process, they were great!
So... back to the story. They got Thunder to the hospital, and by then he was stabilizing a little, so they put him on IV fluids and checked him over good. Other than the fact that his digestive system was ejecting its contents from both ends of the dog, he seemed to be doing okay by that point, making me very glad that the tramadol and the hydrocodone were both well up out of doggy reach. He was sitting up and wagging at them when I was talking to Dr. Roach, and she had to go help the tech get his blood pressure 'cause he was feeling good enough to be wiggly. Thankfully, his blood pressure and blood work all looked good, except for a bit of an electrolyte imbalance. They gave him activated charcoal to soak up the rest of the stuff in his stomach and he's staying overnight at the clinic, but they expect to send him home tomorrow.
So... that was my exciting news of the day. (And here I thought my LJ post for today would be about the keynote speech and the new Mac laptop that was announced. Maybe later...)
