Mr. Chaser had his follow-up appointment with the vet at 8 a.m. *yawn* and the vet's comment was that "it's like seeing a completely different dog" (this is not my normal vet... it's actually her boss, 'cause he was there the morning I made my emergency trip in). So... the good news is that the drugs did their job and the prostatitis is much improved. He's scheduled to be neutered on Thursday, since that should settle down any hormones which would keep triggering the prostatitis (which apparently tends to be chronic once it starts). While he's under, they're going to clean his teeth (which are only mildly plaquey, but hey, I'm big on getting the best possible use of the occasional times that he's anesthetized) and trim his nails. While they were drawing the blood for the pre-op panels, they pulled enough to get his distemper and parvo titers run, since he was about to be due for those, and Dr. Veling and I had a lovely agreeable chat about limited vaccine protocols (I do so adore a vet who doesn't have to be bludgeoned into agreeing with me! :-) )

So Thursday morning I'll be up at dawn to have Chase at the vet by 6:30, then he'll be home that afternoon. They use lasers and internal stitches and they said most dogs go home not even limping.

Since his only ongoing health problem at that point will be mild arthritis, which would be better if he could swim, which he won't currently do 'cause he can't see where he's going, I'm going to reconsider cataract surgery. Since all of his grandparents lived to 15 or 16, I don't think I want to leave him bumping into walls and feeling his way through life for another two or three years, so assuming that he doesn't have any problems with the anesthesia on Thursday, I'm going to set up an appointment to run him up to Purdue for the ERG that will tell us if he's a good candidate for cataract surgery.

I'm glad Mr Chase is feeling better, and hope his surgery goes well. Isn't it amazing the things they can do for pets now? If he has the cataract surgery can you have them put in some special-effects lenses that will make him look all crazy and Cujo-ish? :)

BTW, we'll be joining the ranks of the canine-owned this weekend. We're driving to Ohio to pick up a Great Pyreneese puppy to be our livestock guardian dog.
